Acupuncture is a 2000 year old therapeutic practice that focuses on restoring and rebalancing a person's innate health and wellness. Classically, acupuncture works by directing and manipulating the flow of vital energy throughout the body. This vital energy has many names, Qi, Prana, Spirit, or Breath, and without this vital energy conducting throughout the body there would be no physiological processes happening. According to Chinese Medicine, illness, disease, and pain occur when there is a blockage or imbalance in the flow of this energy. Acupuncture strategically places needles along various energetic pathways, analogous to the connective tissue and fascia, in order to effect the flow of this Qi and restore balance.

In modern biomedical terms acupuncture works by regulating the body's nervous system and stimulating a wide range of physiological processes. In musculoskeletal pain acupuncture works by releasing tight and imbalanced muscles through the use of trigger points. When there is chronic pain and inflammation, acupuncture stimulates the release of our endogenous pain killers as well as our endogenous anti-inflammatory neuropeptides. The Acupuncture also stimulates the release of nitric oxide to increase circulation and promote blood flow. Lastly, acupuncture works through regulating the central nervous system and manipulating the pain perception pathways.
Acupuncture is able to treat pain neurologically by reprogramming our limbic system and how we experience pain.

All these mechanisms make it possible for acupuncture to be able to treat a number of different conditions.
